First draft of narrative is due Wed. 9/24 – TYPED.
Mon. class
1. Extra credit for signed syllabus or planner. Copy assignments into planner.
2. Review syllabus for the week.
3. Intro new roots #41-50 on pg. 2 and #1-10 on pg. 17. Quiz on roots Fri.
4. Review writing skills from last week: avoiding run-ons, showing instead of telling, adding dialogue.
5. Hand out Lit books.
6. Enter “Words To Know” for 1st selection, “The Treasure of Lemon Brown” in LA spiral & define:
ajar, commence, gnarled, impromptu, ominous, tentatively, vault (verb).
HW 1. Finish vocab. for “Lemon Brown” if not finished in class.
2. Type 1st draft of narrative - due Wed.
3. Study roots #41-50 and 1-10 on pg. 17 and vocab. words for “Lemon Brown” – quiz Fri.
Tues. class
1. Review vocab. words from “Lemon Brown.”
2. Review literary terms – characterization, conflict, conclusion (resolution), plot, exposition, complications, climax, theme, point of view, and irony.
3. Preview Lemon Brown pg. 17 in Lit. book. Begin reading the story.
HW 1. Read “Treasure of Lemon Brown” pg. 18.
Typed first draft due tomorrow, turn in planning pg. also.
Wed. class
1. Intro peer editing and checklist.
2. Peer edit 1st draft using checklist.
3. Be sure to get 2 classmates to read and edit your draft.
HW 1. Take 1st draft home, revise and correct, and print out a final draft – due Friday.
Return all 4 parts of essay: planning pg. 1st draft, checklist, final draft.
Thur. class
1. Discusss “Lemon Brown” – Complete questions at end of story pg. 27 #1-4.
2. Complete characterization chart from pg. 27 on the overhead.
3. Identify conflict, complications, climax, conclusion and theme of “Treasure of Lemon Brown”
Complete Words to Know Activity on pg. 28. Quiz on these words Fri. with the roots quiz.
HW Study roots #41-50 & 1-10 on pg. 17 and vocab. words (spelling & def.) for “Lemon Brown” quiz Fri.
Optional – bring a favorite blues CD to share with the class.

1. Turn in all 4 parts of Narrative essay: planning pg., 1st draft, checklist, and final draft.

FYI – Don’t forget – if you are absent for a quiz, you must come in at lunch and make it up. You can eat while taking the quiz or take the quiz first and then go to lunch when you are finished.
